Hi. Think of this as in introduction. What are we doing here? Well, Taco Bell Quarterly (yes, a Taco Bell themed literary magazine) put it best in a recent tweet:
This site and (the things herein) are the culmination of a few years’ worth of hemming, hawing and a deep-seated concern of generally being perceived. I’ve always thought blogging shouldn’t have fallen out of vogue, but never felt like what I had to say was worthwhile. Designs for some of the things in my shop have been kicking around for upwards of 8 years, and some of the actual products have been sitting on a shelf in my “office” for over a year. This website itself has been “Coming Soon” since February 2023, and I just haven’t been able to bring myself to pull the trigger – until now. Consider this me setting myself on fire.
So what is this?
It’s me making things “to make sense of things” as the site’s cringe-inducing tagline suggests. Making things and sharing them—and sometimes selling them—because if being terminally online has taught me anything, it’s that external validation will cure what ails you. (It won’t, it really won’t.)
So what’s with the name?
I make a lot of things with fabric; I sew, I cross stitch, I embroider. Weaving is obviously tied to fabric arts, weft is the more obscure word: it refers to the horizontal threads interlaced through the warp in a woven fabric. So why not call it Weft and Warp or something like that? Because The Weakerthans didn’t release an album called “Left and Larp” now did they? That’s right – the perfect intersection of two of my favourite things; arts and crafts and emo-tinged indie rock. Not to mention Warp & Weft would get lost in the search results amongst a clothing line from New York, a restaurant from Scottsdale Arizona, and actual information about woven fabric.
So what’s next?
(Actually, first, what’s with me starting sentences with “So”? is this something that needs interrogation? No. Not going down that road.) What’s next is I start (or continue) to make things and share them here. Whether it’s little tchotchkes & pins, or cross-stitch patterns, or recipes (without the ambling stories of pumpkin patches in mid-October, or the smell of my grandmother’s kitchen when making peanut butter cookies) or videos for said recipes (with the ambling stories) or music (I used to be in a band, they’re still around and they’re really good, you should check them out)
So (there’s that so again) thanks for reading this and come back around sometime soon.
